Honda CB750 sells for £161,000 to become the most expensive Japanese bike to ever sell at auction
•Most expensive Japanese bike ever sold at auction
•Smashes the previous record, also set by a Honda by £83,000
March 4th 2018 will now go down in history as the day the most expensive bike ever sold at auction, sold for £161,000. The bike sold at H&H Classic’s auction at the British National Motorcycle Museum. This isn’t just any CB750, this is a one of four pre-production bike built for promotional purposes back in 1968. The bike was slated to reach between £35,000 to £40,000 before the sale, but thanks to a serious bidding war the final hammer price soared to £161,000. The previous record of $180,000 ($83,000 less than the CB750) set by another Honda, a 1962 Honda CR72 racer back in 2009.
The bike was first shown publicly in Europe at the Brighton Motorcycle show on April 5, 1969, also appearing on the cover of the May, 1969 issue of Motorcycle Mechanics. The auction house claims that this bike does not share a single part with the production model and has been in the same private collection for the past 35 years. It was undergoing a restoration when the owner passed away.
